Welcome to Inside Story
All about the extraordinary people, places, events and music behind my fiction
Hello and welcome. I’m glad you’re here.
Who am I? Former college teacher, former freelance journalist, dabbler in watercolor painting, antique hound. Dog lover, although sadly, I am dogless at the moment after the demise of Jake, the last of my beloved golden retrievers.
I’ve been a published author for more than thirty years, writing everything from middle grade and YA fiction to inspirational historical fiction and most recently, historical fiction focused on real life women whose stories have been mostly forgotten. My focus here on Substack is to share a little bit of the history behind the books I write, and the books I love as well as a behind -the -scenes look at this writer’s life.
My most recent novel is A Season in Saigon, about the women who covered the war in Vietnam. Over on my website blog you’ll find a series of posts about Ann Bryan, Catherine Leroy, Dickey Chapelle, and Kate Webb among others, and a couple of posts about the music that defined the Vietnam era. For music lovers, there’s a playlist on the Season in Saigon book page. Find those posts here: www.dorothylovebooks.com
Two new novels are in the works. SCRIPT GIRL set in Hollywood in the 1940s was inspired by two of Tinseltown’s first female scriptwriters, Meta Carpenter and Joan Harrison. A QUIET LITTLE TOWN is a mid century mystery set in a fictional town near my real-life home here in the Texas hill country.
I’m excited to share the history behind these stories, as well as cover reveals, publication dates, and other info. If you love history as much as I do, I hope you’ll subscribe and come along on this new Substack journey with me.
Thanks for reading! Until next time,
Dorothy
